Two to three years, not five

In a temperate climate a car battery lasts four to five years. In Riyadh, two to three is normal. Heat accelerates the chemistry inside the battery and evaporates the electrolyte, and an engine bay in a car parked outside in July sits far above the ambient temperature. A battery does not usually fail gradually here. It works, and then one morning it does not.

The warning signs

You get a few days of notice if you know what to listen for.

• The starter turns over more slowly than usual, especially on the first start of the day
• Headlights dim noticeably while cranking
• The car starts fine when driven daily but struggles after a weekend parked
• Dashboard warning lights flicker as the engine catches
• Electric windows move more slowly than they used to

What actually drains it

Short trips are the quiet killer. A ten-minute drive to the shops does not replace the charge used to start the engine, so a car used only for short journeys runs at a deficit for weeks. Add a dashcam or a tracker wired to permanent power, and a car parked for two weeks can come back flat. Corrosion on the terminals looks minor and can stop a car entirely.

Jump-start or replace

A jump-start gets you moving, but it does not tell you whether the battery will hold charge. A proper call-out tests both the battery and the alternator, because a failing alternator will flatten a brand-new battery within days and people replace the battery twice before anyone checks. Ask for the alternator reading, not just the boost.

What it costs in Riyadh

A call-out and boost starts from SAR 100 and takes about ten minutes once the van arrives, usually within 20 to 40 minutes of your message. A replacement battery is charged at market price plus fitting, and the old one is taken away. If the car is in a basement car park, say so when you message, because the van reaches basement levels directly.
