The circular problem

To renew the istimara you need a valid periodic inspection, the Fahas. To reach the inspection centre you have to drive a car whose registration has expired, which is exactly what the traffic authority fines you for. The clean answer is a flatbed: the car travels as cargo rather than as a vehicle in use, so no offence is committed on the way.

What the centre checks

The periodic inspection is mechanical and safety-focused rather than cosmetic. Expect brakes, steering and suspension, lights and indicators, tyre condition and depth, the exhaust and emissions, glass and mirrors, seat belts, and the chassis and plate numbers matching the istimara.

• Fix the obvious before you go: a blown bulb or a bald tyre fails you and costs a second trip
• Bring the istimara and your ID
• Clear outstanding fines first, since they can block the renewal even after a pass

When the car cannot drive at all

If the car does not run, the flatbed is the only option in both directions, and it is worth deciding first whether the repair is worth doing. Paying to move a car twice for an inspection it will not pass is money spent on nothing. Ask the workshop for an honest assessment before booking the transport.

Booking the move

Tell the dispatcher it is unregistered and whether it drives. Both facts change which truck comes and how it is loaded. A car that rolls is winched on quickly; one with locked wheels or a flat tyre needs skates. Inside Riyadh this starts from SAR 150 and the price is fixed before the truck moves.
