How the hydraulics do the job

Why do you let the tyres down first?
Dropping to about 15 psi lengthens the tyre's contact patch, which spreads the weight and lets it float rather than dig. It is the single most effective thing in sand and it costs nothing.
How do you winch where there is nothing to pull against?
A ground anchor — a buried plate or a sand stake — becomes the fixed point. On a dune with no anchor at all, the second truck parks on firm ground and becomes it.
Can you reach me in the Red Sand at night?
Yes, and night is often easier because cooler sand carries weight better. Send your pin from the point where you got stuck, not from where you started.
Will my car be damaged?
The risk in sand is sucking sand into the air filter and overheating the gearbox, both of which come from spinning the wheels. Stop trying as soon as you are stuck and the recovery is usually clean.
